The Truth About How Boring Life Is Without Alcohol Medium

But it wasn’t that long ago that I was anxious, overwhelmed, and drinking a bottle of wine and night to unwind. I thought that wine was the glue, holding my life together, helping me cope with my kids, my stressful job and my busy life. I didn’t realize that my love affair with drinking was making me more anxious and less able to manage my responsibilities.

As with anxiety, COVID has seen rates of loneliness soar, as people have been forced apart for months, or have lost connections to friends or social groups. Many people admit to drinking out of boredom because they feel lonely. It’s very common for people, especially those with additional mental health issues like depression and anxiety, to drink out of boredom. Think of times or places where alcohol is normally found. Parties, seasonal events, family meals or work gatherings might spring to mind.

Healthy Hobbies to Replace Drinking

So this is the perfect time to record this episode. The quote is something I had on my vision board when I was quitting drinking, and I still have it on now. It was something I looked at every day, and it inspired me to keep going. And it says, “You’ll need coffee shops and sunsets and road trips, you’ll need airplanes and passports and new songs and old songs. A professional can give you information about drinking, risk factors for substance abuse, and strategies for managing or quitting alcohol. Even if you don’t think you have a problem, talking to a professional might give you the information you need to ensure you have a healthy relationship with alcohol.

There is an in-between time (somewhere in the middle of “no longer” (drinking) and “not yet” (your full life, the one you love, without alcohol in it)). A screening drinking out of boredom test could give you a little more feedback about whether your drinking is a problem. But, a screening test shouldn’t be a substitute for medical advice.

Fishing, quilting, gardening, and even video games are much more productive than using drugs or drinking. Fill your idle time with hobbies and activities to keep your brain from drifting to dark places. Now that I’ve quit drinking, I am just living, just living, I am just going through life, not recovering. Just waking up and seeing the sunshine or the rain, I’m taking care of my kids, I’m getting coffee, I’m reading books on doing yard work, I’m doing good productive work. Some days are not very exciting, and some days are joy filled. Some days, I’m moving forward on projects that get me really, really excited.

Is It Boredom or Something Else?

Or someone said even listening to it on audiobook was even better, because the stories are so rich and descriptive, and also short so you can listen to them in snippets. But just giving you ideas of what you can do, and picking out an assignment that you want to try. You can read a novel that is not about subprime.

How do I train myself to drink less?

  1. Set limits. Decide how many days a week you plan to drink and how many drinks you plan to have.
  2. Count your drinks.
  3. Manage your “triggers.” If certain people, places, or activities tempt you to drink more than you planned, you can avoid those triggers.
  4. Find support.

You shouldn’t feel pressured to explain yourself. However, doing so might make it easier for those around you to understand why you’re changing your drinking habits. Some friends may even relate to your goals and decide to join you in cutting back. The conversation doesn’t need to feel formal. You don’t need to gather all your friends in one room and make a big announcement. You can casually mention your new drinking habits in one-on-one interactions.
